The original owner of the first Castle was Robert de Todeni, William the Conqueror's Standard Bearer at Hastings, and it is now the seat of the Duke of Rutland. Early constructions were destroyed over the years during the Wars of the Roses, the Civil War and by fire in 1816. The present early 19th century building is elegant and contains various collections of furniture and porcelain as well as housing the Museum of The Queen's Royal Lancers (16th/15th) and the 17th/21st Lancers cavalry regiments. There are Promenade Concerts and Medieval Jousting in a full calendar of events.
We are pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess on the birth (on 24th July 2003 at Nottingham City Hospital, weighing-in at 9lbs.) of their new Son Lord Hugo William James Manners, who joined his siblings Violet, Alice, Eliza and Charles back at Belvoir Castle a few days later.
The Duke of Rutland's Hounds had their final Meet of the Season on 15th March 2003 at the Castle and there is a page covering this on the RURAL ASPECT WEBSITE.
