KAPELLE - MELTON CELEBRATIONS

by Eric Young (Travel Organiser) - 2 August 2000

A group of Members from Melton Mowbray visited Kapelle for the Dutch Queen's Birthday celebrations from Friday 28th April to Tuesday 2nd May 2000, travelling via Dover to Ostend on Seacat, in three cars.
Eric and Beryl Young, Arthur and Karen Marshall, with her Mother and Father, Robert Mitchell and Alan and Irene Wilson-Benn met up at Dover, then stayed in convoy for the outward journey

We were welcomed by Jan Oostchoek, the Chairman of Kapelle Twinning and our Hosts at De Vroon (the Village Hall).

On Saturday 29th April, in Wemeldinge, a village forming part of the Kapelle District, a parade of 32 floats toured the streets (which were decorated with flags and bunting) for two hours or more.

Our Hosts looked after us in the usual way, with plenty to eat and drink, and took us out sightseeing.

The Dutch Queen's Birthday parade had the "Euro" as its theme.

We are planning a second visit this year, for Kapelle Day - 26th August - and hope to have with us for display in either the Church or the Council Offices THE MELTON MOWBRAY MILLENNIUM QUILT
The Quilt was made by some Members of the Twinning Association and others, and depicts 20 scenes and landmarks around Melton Mowbray.
We will be travelling out on Thursday 24th August and returning on Monday 28th August.
